Do you want to move people with your words? I’m working on publishing my next guide and wanted to give you a behind-the-scenes look at what actors do to tap into their emotions. 🎬🔥

Here’s things that help me:

Step 1: Connect to Your Breath
Before anything, take a deep breath and really feel it in your belly. Don’t just fill your chest—breathe low and deep. This grounds you and gives your voice strength. When you’re connected to your breath, your words feel more full and authentic.

Step 2: Unlock Your Jaw
This is key to tapping into your emotions. So, loosen up! Massage around your jawline and let your mouth open a little wider. When your jaw is relaxed, your voice can flow out freely.

Step 3: Be Bigger Than You Think (Overdo It)
When you’re speaking, go bigger—even if it feels like you’re overdoing it. Use more energy than you think you need. You can always dial it back, but going a little extra helps bring your words to life. Express more than you think feels comfortable. Your voice will sound way more engaging.

Step 4: Involve Your Face
Your face a huge part of how your voice comes out! When you speak, let your face move with your words. Smile, raise your eyebrows, or show surprise when needed. This helps your voice match your emotions and makes you sound way more alive.

Step 5: Speak With Your Whole Body
Your body is your instrument—so use it! Stand tall, engage your posture, and let your whole body support your voice. Don’t just talk with your mouth; let your whole body participate. This makes your voice sound fuller and helps you communicate more powerfully.

This is me, 10 years ago in 2015, recording one of my first tutorials on improving your speaking voice. I made this for a firm, where I was training CEOs and business leaders to use their voices more effectively. 🎤

Looking back, I wish I could tell my past self (and anyone struggling with their speaking voice) these five things:

5 Steps to Letting Your True Voice Out on Camera

1: Talk Like Myself
Stop trying to sound “professional” or “perfect.” The more you push, the more your voice tenses up. The best speakers sound like themselves—just clearer and more intentional.

2: Don’t Worry About Being Liked—Focus on Your Why 🎯
Instead of stressing over how you sound or whether people will approve, center yourself in your purpose. Why are you speaking? What do you want to share? When you focus on why you’re doing this, your voice will naturally become more grounded and powerful.

3: Loosen Up! 😮
A tight jaw = a stiff, unnatural voice. Before speaking, gently massage your jaw and let it hang open for a few seconds. You’ll instantly sound freer and more natural.

4: SLOW. IT. DOWN. ⏳
Nervous speakers rush. Confident speakers pause. Give your words space to land—your voice (and your message) will have more impact.

5: Don’t Aim for Perfect, Aim for Connection 🤝
Trying to sound perfect is the fastest way to sound awkward. Instead, focus on connecting with your audience. Let your real personality show. It’s okay to stumble. It’s okay to take your time. Being YOU is what makes your voice compelling.
